What are Static and Dynamic Stretches?
Stretching can be either Static or Dynamic. Dynamic stretching is a strategy used to improve mobility while moving through a range of motion, often in a manner that looks like the activity or sport that is going to be performed. Static stretching is holding a stretch without movement, usually only at the end-range of a muscle.

Static versus Dynamic Stretches: Current Concepts
| Static Stretching | Dynamic Stretching |
How to perform | Involves holding a muscle on stretch in a single position | Involves function sport-specific movements throughout the full range of motion. |
Uses | Use after exercise to work on stiff muscles | Use before exercise as part of your warm-up routine. |
Performance | Temporarily decrease performance (decreased force-production; decreased agility; decreased jump height) | Enhance performance (increased force-production, speed, power, and agility) |
Risk of injury | Temporarily increase risk of injury | Decrease risk of injury |
