General Questions

What does a physiotherapist do?

A physiotherapist helps you recover from injuries, reduce pain, and improve your ability to move and function well in daily life. This includes hands‑on techniques like joint mobilization and soft tissue work, tailored exercise programs to restore strength and flexibility, and personalized advice to prevent symptoms from returning. A key part of physiotherapy is education — I help you understand what’s causing your pain and how to fix it

  • Example: If you have chronic neck stiffness from desk work, a physiotherapist may combine manual neck mobilizations with posture retraining, acupuncture, and home exercises to release tension and prevent flare‑ups.

What should I expect during my first session?

Your first session typically starts with a full assessment where the physiotherapist will ask questions about your symptoms, how the issue began, and how it affects your daily activities. You’ll then have a movement screen to assess posture, strength, and flexibility. Based on this, a tailored treatment plan is created.

Example: On your first visit for knee pain, you might be asked to walk, squat, and balance so we can see how your movement patterns contribute to the problem.

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist in Malta?

No, you don’t need a doctor’s referral to book a physiotherapy appointment in Malta. You can self‑refer and book directly with my clinic. However, if you plan to claim via health insurance, some providers may ask for a referral or additional documentation before reimbursing sessions.

Example: Your insurer might require a referral letter before covering sessions for back pain — so check your policy or ask me for more information before starting treatment.

How often should I see a physiotherapist?

The frequency of sessions depends on factors such as the severity of your condition, your goals, and how quickly you respond to treatment. Most clients begin with weekly sessions for the first 3–6 weeks, followed by reassessment and a plan to reduce frequency as you improve.
Example: Someone recovering from ankle surgery may start with twice‑weekly visits for the first month before switching to weekly or bi‑weekly checks as strength and mobility improve.

What conditions do you treat?

I treat a wide range of musculoskeletal issues including back pain, sports injuries, osteoarthritis, post-op rehab, and more. Please find the full list of physiotherapy services.

Example: A runner with Achilles tendon pain might get a plan that includes load‑management education, mobility drills, and progressive strength training.”

Sports and Performance

Can physiotherapy help improve athletic performance?

Yes, physiotherapy supports peak performance by identifying movement inefficiency, enhancing mobility, flexibility, strength, and preventing injury—especially important for athletes. Performance oriented sessions may include sport-specific drills, movement pattern optimization, and recovery strategies.

Example: A tennis player with shoulder fatigue may get exercises to improve rotator cuff strength and scapular control to enhance service speed and reduce shoulder strain.

What are the best recovery treatments for athletes?

Recovery treatments include cupping, dry needling, joint mobilization, stretching, and individualized exercise programs. Please find the full list of physiotherapy services.
